friday 08.24 - divAmeter

there's a longer divadash below, but let's get to the REAL STUFF. the divAmeter.

this week, we have a stunning upset. if you'll recall - on every previous divAmeter, amy winehouse has had a magnificent showing. not this week. and the battle between rihanna and beyonce comes to a head.

1. Rihanna - 70
Rihanna comes in at 70 this week and tops the divAmeter. it's astounding, really, if you ponder it a moment given the astronomical highest score last week (195 by beyonce). but, with no vma nominations roaring in this week, the scores couldn't climb quite as high. admittedly, rihanna got an extra boost this week for rockin that cast like it ain't no thang.


2. Beyonce - 65
Beyonce took a hit this week with yet another concert debacle. this time, however, there's just not much sympathy left. good thing she had on a bra. she also had several outings for her fashion line and perfume, but she's cooling off for the time being. there's a rumor of an 08 album, too...why can i just not get excited anymore?




3. Ciara - 60
If anyone knows how to hold their spot, it's Ciara. She comes in at number 3 again this week. Go figure. I'm just ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ on her right now. Until she switches up that hair and makeup again, or stops rockin that 2001 urban look, I just can't get excited.



4. Alicia Keys -55
Alicia, Alicia. Does she have an album coming out soon? She'd better, cause she's spot on with this movie promotion. She's looking gorgeous (she's really never looked better) and redeemed herself in a cute jumpsuit on MTV after that disastrous leopard print dress :(




5. Jennifer Lopez - 45
Jenny shares the fifth spot with Mariah this week. I'm really liking her peaceful not overwhelming publicity these days. Remember the Bennifer days? It seems like she really learned her lesson and now knows how to show up sparingly and get great shots, which is really all you need...





5. Mariah - 45
Mariah ties, but I have a feeling we're about to see our favorite diva ROCKET to the top and stay there Beyonce style for the next three months. Her Interview cover is probably the first of a bunch of covers. And Mariah is the original publicity DIVA. We'll see how the next few months unfold with her. Can't wait.

you can read more about this in the divadash below, but homegirl is wilin. she needs serious help, but she LEFT rehab. she needs to say yes, yes, yes, for real this time :(

it's also worth mentioning that Britney, after coming in at a PERILOUS -130 last week, is at a respectable -5 this week. i mean, sure she turned down a duet with Justin, but she actually has a new record. even though the record SUCKS, it means she's recording and trying to do SOMETHING with her career which is ALWAYS a plus.

friday 08.24 - divadash

first - apologies. i have been stressed within an inch of my life the past week, so getting up the posts on time was nearly impossible. i'm just so physically tired.

ok - on to the goodies.

it's always sad to start off with bad news. but we have some VERY bad news about amy winehouse. not only is she OUT of rehab, but reports (and PHOTOS) show that she and her husband were having a crazy drug-fueled brawl. while i can't figure out if she got drugs and he fought her cause she was using, or vice versa, or they were fighting over who got the drugs, all i CAN say is that this is really sad, and our lil diva (who has made many appearances on the divAmeter) needs some SERIOUS A&E INTERVENTION-STYLE HELP.







it seems like everyone has been popping up here and there this week.

just to begin with the legend - mariah bust onto the scene with a HOTTTTT Interview magazine cover. i know i'm not the only one excited for the impending promo blitz for that November album. i foresee many magazine covers in the next few months for mimi :)











beyonce was spotted out at r&b live at spotlight live in new york. her NAD sister, solange, was performing, looking almost a dead ringer for beyonce in the green light video (that black and white horizontal stripe dress). i'm mad because that was supposed to be my halloween costume, but whatever......!!!!! she didn't walk the carpet, presumably not to distract from her sis...i'll give her that :) no, i have no desire to rehash the supposed "nip slip" incident, cause i'm with her publicist on the likelihood of that happening.











jenny showed up in new york to host the secret partners america's "hottest" dancer competition. she looks really cute, as usual.



















christina and her baby bump walked around - she's had a nasty bout with the flu. i hope she and baby are feeling better :)

















ciara showed up at a macy's/rocawear event at the macy's in herald square. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. everything from her makeup to her styling is just boring me like TO SLEEP these days. even her makeup colors look dated. i'm gonna need her to have a styling intervention and SOON. regardless. she continues spotless in the pr department. new single soon?












miss alicia keys was spotted over at trl looking way better than she did last week in that fugly leopard print.

rihanna was out at the mobo awards in london. still rockin that cast!

















gwen is steady on the road in malaysia. i read recently that beyonce will have to modify her tour for the malaysia show - something about having to be covered from the neck to the knee? lol. gwen has it covered.

monday 08.20 - divadash

i hope you had a fantastic weekend. mine was peaceful. i had family around. the divas were, of course, up to their usual.

it's good to see kelis again. it's been a minute. she's pictured here with her hubby, nas at her bday party. i love seeing the two of them together. they just really GO. honestly, i think they are the perfect hip-hop couple if i had to judge superficially. something about bee and jay always seems contrived, even though they do occasionally have a tender look or two. anyway, kelis looks like she's having a blast.


here's a week or two old pic of kelly rowland chillin on the beach. her body is fierce. i feel kinda bad for her - that her album isn't doing so great, but maybe if she'd made better music...

Beyonce, of course! She and Munchie, her shih tzu, were featured in a 2004 summer issue of Harper's Bazaar. Munchie, in one of the cuter photos, was carried by her long time HUMONGO bodyguard.

i love fridays. no really. i love them. and today is no different. today's weekend wonder is simply to have a fantastic weekend. i may get divadash up later today or tomorrow because unlike me - a diva is ALWAYS on duty.

thursday 08.16 - divadash

my my my. they tried to make her go to rehab.




by now it's old news, but i suppose i was hoping it would change for the better. turns out the rumor is in fact true. our favorite old lush has checked in. i hope it does her some good.

meanwhile, the beyonce train or should i say PLANE rolled into canada to launch "dereon" in toronto. i still find the clothes tacky, but bee is looking good as usual. she's looking a little bit tired lately in her close shots, though. don't forget she'll be in macy's in herald square today signing 100 buck perfume boxes.

in other news, she'll be essentially re-releasing b'day as a spanish album - irremplazable. i hope she doesn't outsell j.lo, for j.lo's self-respect and all.

kelly clarkson showed up at a party in las vegas looking a HOT MESS. i'm actually embarrassed for the poor thing. but i think it's cute that she was treating her friends to a night out! that's the way to spread love :)

thursday 08.16 - DIT

happy thursday, y'all. i can't believe we're nearly through the week. i've been exhausted this entire week because i've been getting my study on and working like a maniac. such is life.

divadash will be up later, but for now....on to this week's diva in training!

it took me a minute to come up with her, but i really feel like she is deserving. some of you may disagree.

now, before i catch major heat, let me say that i know there are those of you who fall into two camps: 1-"wtf. she was a spice girl that's totally not legit. don't you remember her jumping around crazily in "wannabe"??!" and 2-"wait. she's already a legitimate diva."

to the first camp - spice girls is no worse than britney or any other pop princess. i was in seventh grade when spice girls were out and i remember being INSANELY excited about spiceworld. halloween my friends dressed up as the spice girls. and on and on.

to the second camp - she doesn't get to be a legitimate diva because she was way too overshadowed back then--and needed a major style METAMORPHOSIS. i mean just cause it was the 90s doesn't excuse EVERYTHING.

anyway - in the late 90s, it was all about ginger and baby. now, it's clearly about posh and MEL B. (thank GOD that scary moniker isn't used so much anymore).

i loved how she handled her baby drama. i don't even care about the new rumors about her new hubby. eddie should claim what's rightfully his, and her lunch with nicole murphy only sealed the deal in my eyes. she's definitely a DIT, and if this spice girls reunion actually goes over as planned, she might just catapult into FULL ON DIVA!!!!!!!!!

wednesday 08.15 - divadash

rihanna made the rounds to the people music lounge at the highline ballroom in nyc. she looks peaceful and summery sweet. i'm lovin her pics with her little bro - he has her nose!

my favorite angry songstress, fiona apple hit the stage in central park (why i was not informed i DO NOT KNOW). when the pawn is one of the best albums EVER. i'm glad to see she's performing again. she's definitely prone to extreme moodiness.

she's looking good.


and finally one more of ciara at glamour reel music out in LA. i dunno - i'm just feelin her right now. she's boring me to pieces, but with all these appearances, she's definitely at least gonna hold her spot if not GAIN on the divAmeter. what can you do? the divAmeter is truth.

finally for all you beyoncephiles - beyonce will be doing an in-store at macy's in nyc TOMORROW at noon. line up early, y'all.

which R&B NAD needs to keep a better handle on her man of several years? whenever he's out of her presence, he's scheming on whatever walks his way. note: this is a NAD - so don't you dare guess beyonce!

tuesday 08.14 - divadrops

an interesting story popped up over at sandra rose. basically, mathew knowles went bonkers over this daily news review of beyonce's show which was less than stellar. she points out that someone ELSE pointed out that the post's review was even harsher. i have a few thoughts.

1. jim farber is an old fart who is hit or miss on his reviews of music.
2. mathew knowles is a zealous dadager who is of course going to slam anyone who doesn't give his golden child perfect reviews.
3. neither of the reviews is actually that harsh. they examine the shows less from a technical perspective and more from an aesthetic perspective and neither criticizes beyonce on anything she hasn't been criticized on before (i.e. singing too hard and too loud, etc.).

i'm not really mad at the reviews, i guess. i still heart beyonce!

ciara popped up in this rocawear ad. i don't really approve of rocawear or baby phat post adolescence, but you know each girl has her own style. she looks really good here.

she also played smashfest - with r.kelly in tow at one point, so she'll lose points for THAT. i'm also getting a little bit tired of her style...











meanwhile, erykah badu, who's getting ready for her new album and recently shot a video, played a show in amsterdam. she's lookin straight separated at birth from lauryn hill these days...



actually...she's sorta reminding me of ALEXYSS TYLOR. and if you don't know who she is, then you need to check her out on youtube...but not while at work!

monday 08.13 - whatever happened to...(NOT)!

lately each time i wonder what happened to somebody, they pop up! lucky us.

jill scott has a new song and video out. i haven't really been hearing it on the radio and haven't checked its spins, but i'm glad to see she's busy at work post divorce.



her album is due out september 25th, but to be totally honest i haven't seen ANY promo for this set, and i'm a little nervous. do you think it may get pushed back?

thursday 08.09 - divalations!

congrats are in order for tamia and grant hill -

tamia gave birth to a baby girl - lael rose hill, who will join her 5 year old sister Myla Grace at home!

so happy for them both!

ok - before the divAmeter - i just have to ask WHITNEY what the heck is going on - "on good terms"? is that like - still sleepin together on the low? still diggin out doo-doo? i mean, what?


well...well...well...you don't even have to be a super-observant diva observer to know how THIS week will turnout!

here we go!






1. BEYONCE! - 195 (officially, on fire)
with an amex commercial, armani fragrance, killer madison square garden performance, and general fabulousness, you KNEW she would be number one this week. she's basically unstoppable. but it was the SEVEN vma nominations that put her over the top. that's the highest temp in divAmeter history.




2. Rihanna - 135
Rihanna also had a stellar week scoring 5 nominations and presenting the nominees! She also rocked the hell out of that leg brace...and was spotted out at the Grove with a cutie. She doesn't get docked for overpromotion this week - mostly cause I just realized how sweet she sounds when she talks with her Bajan accent :)



3. Ciara - 85
Ciara finds herself solidly in third this week after a less than glowing week. She's mostly here because that album is still selling, and she's not doing anything weird. Her song is hot on the radio, and she's doing everything textbook. I'd like to see a bit more of her out this next week, though.



4. Jennifer Lopez - 60
Jennifer Lopez claims the fourth spot for this divAmeter due to her el cantante promotion - though I have to say - it's getting old. She also has a few records that have leaked over at ConcreteLoop. She gets the real points for shutting down her ex's tell all [People].



5. Amy Winehouse - 50
Amy would have been higher this week, but she gets docked for being hospitalized for exhaustion. I'm sick of celebs not eating, drinking til they pass out, then being "hospitalized" to cancel shows and shit like that. Give me a break. Amy, we love your voice, but eat a chicken wing.

it's BRITNEY. AT -130 (lowest divAmeter score ever). expected. at this point i've given up on her. not even sure that she should still be counted as a diva. SERIOUSLY DEBATING. if you're like me and turn to youtube to relive the glory days...well, here...this is for you...

wednesday 08.08 - divadash

my my my...so much good STUFF. tomorrow's divAmeter should be...INTERESTING.

beyonce, as previously reported has out and about in nyc, filming her amex commercial, hanging with her boo, and generally looking fab. nobody does "i just look like this" like her. i particularly like her round the way, "i could just be a woman on the street" look on the left...except for the high-waisteds.




my personal favorite look on this shoot is this stunning blue dress. i don't even know what to call this color, but i'm loving it. she has that weird smushed breast thing going on that she's prone too, and the high-waisted look isn't so great on her curvy figure above, but i'm gonna have to say that overall she's just her regular pretty self!






ok...now if you're still reading (i know you bee haters are out there alive and well!) let's move on to....RIHANNA! she helped announce the vma noms on trl (beyonce leads the pack, btw). this is a tamer look, i suppose. not sure why that cane's there....and i'm also not sure why she looks like it's so difficult to read the noms...---->

eh. i knew there'd be a butterfly in there, but there's some signature mariah element missing. maybe it's cause her hair is wet. and we know girlfriend prefers the hair to blow in the wind! there has been some kind of intervention in this art direction, and i'm not sure that i approve!
